First TW winners in 2021

After 729 days, it was finally time again: The Travemünder Woche asked for the award ceremony. The focus on 25 July 2019 as well as on 28 July 2021: the sailors. They decided on the TW two years ago and they now chose the first prize winners.

It was a difficult Sunday after a perfect first day to kick off TW, with the yacht crews at least getting one race over the up-and-down course. Both sailors and race committee got a good dose of rain, and the wind didn't make it easy for anyone. The winner's trophies in a low-contact ceremony went to "Intermezzo" (Jens Kuphal, Berlin) in the OSC V class, "Immac Fram" (Kai Mares, Dänischenhagen) in the OSC IV, "Celestine" (Andreas Peschlow, Berlin) in the OSC III and "Pepper and Salt" (Björn Carstensen, Scharbeutz) in the OSC II.

Despite the changeable conditions on Sunday, the crews were pleased that race officer Uwe Wenzel allowed one more race to be sailed. "On Saturday it was world class conditions. Today with less wind it was also good. So we were able to practise that again, too," said Kai Mares, who exclusively took victories in the four races with his crew. "The Travemünder Woche was the start of the regatta season for us, now the Kieler Woche and the German Championship in September will follow." The "Immac" crew does not have any international events on the schedule this year because of Corona, but has nevertheless prepared conscientiously: "We have not let anything slide, worked on the boat in the winter and now also had some intensive training weekends. You can see that we are very well attuned."

For the crew of the "Intermezzo", the Travemünde Week was an important step on the way to the World Championships in August off Tallinn/Estonia. "We had three fantastic races and a race that got a bit wild at the end due to the decreasing and shifting wind. But it was good that Uwe also let us sail this race. The wind was also good at the start," said Jens Kuphal. He was satisfied with the performance of his team: "I am surprised how well it has already worked. We sailed nice manoeuvres and our new sails also worked well." He didn't want to commit to any targets for the World Cup: "It will be the toughest competition we've ever sailed against."

It was a very close race at the start of the TW in the OSC III group. Pepper and Salt" tied for victory ahead of Stefan Meining's "Na und" (Lübeck). "We were also a bit lucky today in the calm wind," admitted winning skipper Björn Carstensen. He is already looking forward to the middle-distance races on the second TW weekend. "Of course we will be there. The TW is simply part of it for us."
