The new challenge for TW: Hanse Baltic Challenge

The Travemünder Woche is launching a new event in the 131st year of the sailing week. For the start of the sailing week the seagoing yachts are sent on a long distance race in two stages from Travemünde to Rügen and back. The Hanse-Baltic-Challenge is to become a new highlight of the sailing regattas during Travemünde Week, and the start will be directly integrated into the opening ceremony of the sailing and festival week on Friday evening, 17 July.

When the official signal "Heißt Flagge" for the start of the fifth Lübeck season is given by Mayor Jan Lindenau on the TW opening day at 6 pm, this will also be the announcement signal for the long-distance sailors. They are supposed to leave the Trave directly in front of the audience at 6:05 p.m. from the Trave towards the east on the 101 nautical miles long journey.

The orga-crew around the race directors Anderl Denecke, Lionel Büttner, Uwe Wenzel and Ecki Graf as well as TW-Projectmanager Birgit Stamp-Oehme, TW managing director Frank Schärffe and sports director Jens Kath put a lot of work into the project to offer the offshore sailors a unique experience. After passing the finish line off Stralsund, Rügen will have a stopover in the harbour of Parow for the first leg of the race with party and award ceremony. BBQ in the evening and a hearty breakfast in the morning before the start of the return race will provide for refreshment and a great sense of community.

The return regatta will be started in the Greifswald Bodden in front of Rügen. The whole fleet will sail through the Rügenbrücke together. After the start, the fleet will sail in the direction of Usedom, from there to the north and around Rügen back to Travemünde (184 nautical miles), where the festive award ceremony awaits.

The facts:

  • All yachts with an ORC Int./Club measurement certificate (GPH value between 500 and 670) and yachts with a yardstick handicap (yardstick between 70 and 91) can participate.
